AU: Power Restriction Proposed for Young Riders

From Laura Anderson of news.com.au, November 11, 2005- Young riders are, statistically, at much greater risk of injury and death in a motorcycle accident than more experienced riders. The EU has a proposal to restrict motorcycle engine size for younger riders where a couple of years of experience are required before a rider can progress to a larger displacement engine.

The Australians are taking a different approach; rather than pin a tiering structure on engine size, per se, the proposal ties the grading system to power to weight ratio. This strategy is smart. Consider that up until a couple of years ago the huge BMW K1200LT was rated at under 80 hp, where a number of 600cc model sportbikes easily exceed 100 hp.

When governments around the world get serious about reducing motorcycle deaths, they will require motorcycle training classes for licensing, a tiered licensing program like the one proposed in this article, and will extend these requirements to new riders independant of age or years of automotive driving experience.
