The Scotsman: LBDNS

Looked But Did Not See (LBDNS)

According to a study by the Scot Department of Transportation, the third most common reason cited for accidents involving cars is that the driver "looked but did not see" the obstacle collided with.

This story, from the Sunday Scotsman, discusses one theory on how LBDNS may be related to safety-related changes in automobile design. Specifically, widening of passenger compartment pillars, while making the compartment more resistent to crushing in the case of severe impact, may also contribute to reduced driver visibility by presenting an increasingly large blind spot.

To their credit, the DoT is spending some money to investigate this issue.
